To my Bodhi Buddies,
Today I enlarged my tech toy family with my latest acquisition in the form of an T43 IBM Thinkpad I picked up for $55.00.
The T43 was the last of the durable IBM branded Thinkpads and marked the end of the 32 bit machines. The T43 is essentially a hopped up T42, a bit faster but also a bit more of an energy pig.
The T43 hails from 2005 (yep 19 years old) and cruises at a whopping 1.6 MHZ, packing 1.5 GB RAM (large for its day) and a 40 GB hard drive.
For those who are curious as to the attraction, the IBM 600E, T40 and T43 had exceptional keyboards. These keyboards are typist dreams, reminiscent of scaled down version of the old IBM Selectric typewriters in terms of feel. While the venerable T61p were superior machines, the keyboards are a step down, spongier and simply not as durable. Hence writers love these old machines.
This machine is destined to join the Bodhi family when the 32 bit Bodhi 7 rolls out. In the meantime I may try out the 32 bit MX-Linux FluxBox on it. I am curious to see how heavy that distro is. MX 23.1 XFCE was significantly heavier than its predecessor so I wonder about the Fluxbox edition.

Wow, 1.6MHz. Even my first XT in the 1980s was like 4.77 MHz. I did have a Commodore Vic 20 that was 1.1MHz tho. Today my main machine is 1600MHz!

Any T43 you can buy now is indeed one of the durable ones. However, like all T4x many, many of those had the flexing issue that would cause the graphics chip or southbridge to come lose and make the laptop unusable/ suffer from graphics errors. I've disassembled hundres of those machines. They're really well built for that. And the keyboards are indeed glorious. Have fun with your T43 - may it last another 19 years. I think it runs on 1.6GHz, though. ;o)
