Hello! I would like to present a web application to teach children the basics of computer science: robursw.atwebpages.com. It implements a virtual actor (ladybug) who walks on a checkered board and draws lines. You can control it interactively or write and execute a program (use the [Tab] key to switch the environment mode). It's something like the Turtle from the Logo programming language, but simpler. The prototype of this web application is the computer program "Kangaroo Roo" (see the section "Roo and Robby/SchoolWorks" at the bottom of math.vanderbilt.edu/sapirmv/). But "Kangaroo Roo" runs on the DOS operating system, while "Ladybug" runs on any modern web browser. You can teach children many structural programming topics with this application: - sequential algorithms;
- cyclic algorithms;
- branching;
- subroutines;
- recursive algorithms.
Both the user interface and the programming language can be translated into the native language of students. The source code of this application is open under the GPL v.3 license: github.com/R0bur/drawing-player. I hope this may be of interest to Escuelas Linux users. Thank you for your attention!

At first I almost deleted your post as spam, lol. And you're right. I shouldn't have created new theme. A good place for my post already exists: Software Choices. Can you move it there and delete this theme? I can delete my post only but not the whole theme... Yea, sure, I can inform Escuelas about this cute app Stefan Thank you!

I think it’s fine here if you’re happy to leave it here.

Hi there! It's great to know about open source applications that we didn't know about! Ladybug is a kind of derivative of Logo, which I personally do not find easier or harder than Logo, as they are in the same league.
The Ladybug web page says: I suspect that Kangaroo Roo was not widely used in the Soviet Union, since that country dissolved in 1991.
One positive aspect of Ladybug is that it can run on any web browser, even when not online. All you have to do is download its offline version, which uses the same files that would be needed on a web server.
On the not so good side, the look and feel of the application is really outdated. In fact, it feels like a DOS program from the nineties. I find the functionality of Ladybug quite similar to KTurtle, which is included in Escuelas Linux, but with a more modern interface. Finally, the Ladybug web page states: What this really means is that some additional translation work would have to be done in this application if it is not run in Russian or English.

escuelaslinux, thank you for your review! By saying "easier", I meant that Ladybug doesn't have any calculations and variables. It doesn't require numbers knowledge at all. This is a limitation, but it forces students to search for original solutions to learning problems.
