Running Linux 20.04.6 and bodhi 6
Ran above and now hangs on boot.
Changed grub config as indicated online and depending on what I set in config I'm getting variations of error hangs including:
hdaudioC0D3: unable to bind codec" Started accounts service Started session c1 of user lightdm
Laptop never boots
What do?

By any chance did the kernel get updated during your last upgrade? Kernel and video drivers are the kinda things that can get updated and prevent boot. If it's kernel, maybe the new version has some issue with your hardware, you can boot your previous (working) kernel from the grub menu under advanced options. Try that first.
If boot process has got al the way to starting lightdm, you're far enough that you should be able to open a tty. Try CTRL+ALT+F2 and see if you can at least login there, if so that's a start, and you can use that for further troubleshooting...

Thanks for the advice re advanced boot. Does that appear at the begining when I choose between bodhi or my other windows system?
The tty2 thing. I've been in there already trying various options. Mainly just editing the grub config "nomodeset" etc but to Jo avail.

The main question here is whether or not you can boot into Windows. You don't need that thing you're calling Grub (that's just a little MBR entry; Grub is on your Bodhi partition, or in its own partition, depending on how you configured it).
Linux can boot Windows, and Windows can boot Linux. It's just a matter of configuration, and it's easy to change.

Yes, one of the options on that menu is "advanced options for bodhi" or something similar and then when yous elect that you get a menu with your current kerrnel and previous one available. try the previous. Since you can get to tty, it seems even more likely its graphics issue. If previous kernel doesn't work, editing grub config with some failsafe options sounds like a good next step. Sounds like you've already checked nomodeset tho, but I'd put "nomodeset noapic acpi=off" to default in there then update-grub

Thanks a lot for your reply. Booting via the previous available kernel did not work. I botted via the previuos available kernel into safe mode then ran the option for "update packages". I clicked "yes" to all options (one was just changing grub logo from jpeg to png) but it did a lot of installing, all sorts of packages. NOW IT WORKS.
My system information is now this:
"NAME="Ubuntu" VERSION="20.04.6 LTS (Focal Fossa)" ID=ubuntu ID_LIKE=debian PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS" VERSION_ID="20.04" HOME_URL="https://www.ubuntu.com/" SUPPORT_URL="https://help.ubuntu.com/" BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/" PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://www.ubuntu.com/legal/terms-and-policies/privacy-policy" VERSION_CODENAME=focal UBUNTU_CODENAME=focal "
but it's still running the bodhi graphics etc.
I will say that, weirdly, the touchpad now works far better than it did before (it was always super sketchy) and button clicks / changing between windows is much quicker.
Resource use is similar to Bodhi before.
I (a complete amateur) assume I have changed it over to UBUNTU. No real idea why it works now

It also didn't ask if I wanted to change the config (previously I messed up and switched from Bodhi to UBUNTU) - it didn't do that this time, maybe it happened when I did update before. Either way it works. I'll run it until it breaks again and then I'll just reinstall. IMO not the best way for an OS but I am an amateur

Nah. Bodhi uses ubuntu repositories. When doing the update, you were probably prompted about release file, and asked if you wanna keep the original or update or check difference etc. You probably switched to ubuntu's, but other than the identifier, it doesn't affect anything. This happened cuz ubuntu repo updated the version number from 20.04.5 to 20.04.6.
Dunno why it works now, but its now working the way it should, the question is more "why did it stop working", not why it works now, cuz it shoudl work now
