Hi, new here!
I'm attempting (and have attempted twice) to install Bodhi Linux 7 as a full install to USB. I have successfully done this with Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, and Lubuntu 20.04 and 22.04.
The process consists of unplugging the HDD of the PC, inserting the USB and linux install disc (since my PC has issues with installing to USB from bootable USB), then proceeding through the install as normal, targeting the USB as the install medium and running through the automated installation. I'm actually using a Lubuntu 20.04 full USB install right now.
My issue is that I ran through the automated install steps with Bodhi Linux 7 Core twice using this process and wound up with what I'm guessing is a UEFI only install? I have an old PC from 2009 with AM2/AM2+ socket with no UEFI support. Is there a trick to making Bodhi install as MBR rather than UEFI? Or do I have to use manual partitioning to switch the install to MBR only?
I have run into this issue before with Batocera 27+, and by chance found that when I converted one of the partitions to FAT32 it booted and ran normally. I haven't tried this yet with Bodhi (or know if this fix would be compatible... I converted my Bodhi USB install from GPT to MBR by accident, forgetting the Batocera fix worked by changing to FAT32 instead).
Anyways, here are my specs in case it helps:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 (95W) 2x2GB DDR2-800 AMD Radeon R7 250 2GB GDDR3 (OEM)
I did run across a thread which mentioned using the first consumer AMD 64 CPU working fine after install, as MBR... but not sure what to do to get it to install as MBR.

In addition to that athlon64 you mentioned that I mention, I also have a Phenom II X4 (although I think mine is 965), and also mbr/bios boot. In fact, just installed bodhi 7 on it on a brand new ssd a couple weeks ago, and disconnected the old hard drives while doing so to make sure grub and everything installed right on the SSD so it would work as only drive (even tho I later plugged back in old drive, and can still boot the old bodhi 5.1 if I really want). And sure enough, it boots fine. So that doesn't help solve your problem at all, just another confirmation that EFI is not required.
edit: confirmed my phenom is 965.

Strange. I wonder what's triggering the UEFI install on my end... I pre-formatted the clean USB to install to, to make sure it's MBR format, but the automated installer just seems to go with UEFI. Guess I might try setting partitions manually to see if that'll go through as MBR. I saw in some installers for other distros they let you choose whether to install as UEFI or MBR, but there seem to be several installation platforms between them also.
Luckily, I just upgraded and will have UEFI whenever I plop the new motherboard in my case.
