I installed Bodhi 7 from a DVD and only found later that the USB ports were not seeing memory sticks. Strangely, a USB mouse works immediately.
The computer is an old Equium A100-02L which came with Windows Vista. It's not lightning-fast, but it's good for Internet access on the go, and the battery is still good for 2+ hours. It's just annoying that I can't use it to copy photographs. Any suggestions, please?

Very odd. If I understand your USB sticks does not appear in thunar? They should be mounted by default. You can check lsusb and dmesg outcomes.
