I see many happy people on this forum, with positive, wonderful experiences with Bodhi.
My experience, thus far, is the polar opposite of theirs. I've been trying to use this system (version 6) for about a month now.
My preferred browser (Brave) crashes regularly. Please don't ask me to change browsers.
Wine won't install the one windows program I need to run (which works flawlessly on my mint and lubuntu boxes). In fact, wine won't install or run a thing on my Bodhi laptop. Does wine work on Bodhi?
Just tried to troubleshoot my VPN program with a live person. We couldn't even get a textfile to appear on the desktop so I could upload it.
Judging by what others are saying, the problems have got to be on my end. However, why do these programs work flawlessly on both my mint and lubuntu systems but not here? Am I limited to only those programs in your app center? Do I have a flawed install?
Seriously, what am I doing wrong? I've worked with various linux distros and I've never experienced this level of difficulty with any of them. The Moksha desktop is gorgeous, but not worth the accompanying hassles so far.
I apologize for any discomfort. I really would like to make this work - sounds like I'm dealing with a crazy significant other, doesn't it? Can the community offer any tips? Should I just erase v6 and install v7?
Help!

Well it wouldn't hurt to start over with version 7, sure. The RC that's available now is good enough for normal usage and will upgrade to release version later this year thru normal updates.
Pretty much everything that works on lubuntu or Mint should work fine on Bodhi. Each problem tho gotta troubleshoot one at a time with more details. Obviously these are not typical. Especially not being able to open a text file. Plus you should be able to upload files without opening them anyway, so two especially weird things. Would love to hear more about those two issues cuz sound very odd.

To me this sounds like either very bad luck, i.e. that you installed Bodhi and right at that moment some hardware problem also occured. Or, more likely, your install files were corrupted and something's causing trouble now.
However, since Bodhi isn't usable for you in that state, I'd do as enigma suggested and try again with Bodhi 7.

Try to run your browser from the command line and write here the messages that appear in the terminal when it crashes. P.S. I encountered some troubles with a web browser but they were solved by checking (or unchecking) Hardware accelerator checkbox in its settings.

My preferred browser (Brave) crashes regularly. Please don't ask me to change browsers. Try turning off hardware acceleration in Brave: menu-->settings-->system--> ...on the right toggle hardware acceleration off and then restart I know you said "Please don't ask me to change browsers." but consider Opera. The reason is why I use it: Opera not only has an ad blocker but a free built in VPN. So that may also mitigate your VPN issue. Note the new Web Browser manager in v7 has Opera as an option thanks to ylee so the install in v7 is painless. Cheers mate.

Y'all are the reasons I'd like Bodhi to work - just a wonderful, supportive group trying to help a dude out!
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to install V7 and see if things improve for me, in a few days when I have some time to spend. Rather than continue to try to fix a system which will shortly be not quite outdated...
Again, thanks for the help and positive comments! I'll be sure to update after I install the update, so to speak!
PS - to answer the points above, tech support was trying to get me to pipe a logfile to a .txt on the desktop. The file never appeared, and we'd tried several methods of producing it. I did verify that the logfile did exist.
Opera is wonderful - I use it on my phone strictly for financial websites - but I prefer brave for various reasons as my daily driver. I pay for my VPN (NordVPN) so I'd like to use it on all my computers.
Again, thanks for all and I'll try V7!

I did verify that the logfile did exist. Try to execute the command provided below in the Terminology application: brave-browser 2>&1 | tee $HOME/brave-browser.log Browser messages will be collected in the brave-browser.log file of your home directory. And Bodhi Linux doesn't display files on the Desktop by default. Maybe that files are in the $HOME/Desktop directory, but they not presented on the Desktop.

Forgive my ignorance (see footnote #1) but what does the "2" and the "1" do in the following command?
brave-browser 2>&1 | tee $HOME/brave-browser.log
I believe I understand the rest of the command but the "2" and the "1" perplex me
I thank you for any assistance you care to afford.
The Scarlet Pimpernel
Footnote(s): #1 for what it is worth I spent over 90 minutes searching around trying to under stand this command before I asked

but what does the "2" and the "1" do in the following command? That digits are numbers of the files automatically opened by the operating system for the launched process (brave-browser): 1 - standard output stream; 2 - standard error stream. The shell script construction "2>&1" redirects standard error stream to the standard output stream. So as normal messages as error messages both will put to the same stream. And that stream redirects to the "tee" utility at the rest of the command. You can read detailed information here: stackoverflow.com/questions/818255/what-does-21-mean

R0bur, thank you for your answer to my query. It is much appreciated. You can do a little research to better understand that redirections. 1) Create the source text file "demo.c" in the C programming language (using simple text editor as nano or leafpad/mousepad): #include <stdio.h> int main () { printf ("Hello!\n"); fprintf (stdout, "Information message.\n"); fprintf (stderr, "Error message.\n"); return 0; }
2) Compile it to the binary executable "demo": gcc -o demo demo.c 3) Play with that binary and redirecting constructions: ./demo ./demo > demo.log ./demo 1> demo.1.log ./demo 2> demo.2.log ./demo 2>&1 | tee demo.12.log ./demo 2>&1 | tee demo.120.log > /dev/null

Greetings all! OP here. Just to close this thread out, I've spent my free time the last two days installing V7 and customizing it. Everything works flawlessly, with the possible exception of my VPN, which I'm not going to bother with as this laptop will not be used regularly, and for non-sensitive items only.
Wine and winetricks installed perfectly using the command line. The one windows program I need to run (my genealogy program Family Historian) works as well as it does on my Mint box. It's limitations are Wine's, not Bodhi's!
I'm going to chalk my previous issues up to a bad install; thanks to all for your support, and keep up the good work!
Best regards,
