Some days ago, as many Linux users already know, RHEL announced the introduction of a new "model" for the availability of the source code of their distribution. link
This decision has practical consequences for RHEL based distros like Alma, Rocky, CentOS... Do you believe that other big dogs of the Linux ecosystem will follow RHEL? What would happen, in theory, if Debian did the same?

Debian is a community run non-profit. They wouldn't do it.
Canonical is kinda doing it already with their ESM, they make you sign up for updates, and only 5 machines are free. RHEL is 16 free machines. Both of them not allowing redistribution per the agreement you make with them. But at least Ubuntu providing the first 5 years completely free for the main repos.
It's more work for alma/rocky now but they'll find their way around it. Redhat is still publishing the source openly in centos stream, just not packaging it, so worst case scenerio those distros just have to figure out which commit applies and package themselves, if they want to be exact RHEL clone.

RedHat is now IBM and like every company, except DatastageTX/Mercator/WTX/TransformationExtender, that IBM acquires IBM DNA contaminates the company as a short term focus on profitability vs true growth and innovation hamstrings the acquisitions.
My point is what you are seeing at RedHat is due to IBM putting their boot on the neck of RedHat and throwing their weight around in order to break the spirit of independence at RedHat. It is classic IBM as entrenched IBM management attempt to break down the command chain in the RedHat ranks and establish their own fiefdoms within RedHat.
So IBM struck at the spirit of Linux to break the hearts of many at RedHat. I saw the same thing when IBM bought Early&Cloud, Candle, Mercator, DataPower, Crossworlds, Neon, Transarc and innumerable other companies.
