I think the preferred way is a reinstall - but we'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable for a final answer. However, updating without reinstall is always possible, but it's more prone to go wrong.
Not sure what you mean when you say finding apps.
For one thing, there is the app center, which has a rather small selection of programs that are known to work really well. However, you can just install anything from the repository and if your machine can handle it, it will work on Bodhi.
So you could, for example, look online for a program you need, like a music notation program.
You'd ask your search engine for: music notation linux and it'll probably show "musescore".
You can then user terminology and just try "sudo apt find musescore" to see if the package is available (should be) and use "sudo apt install musescore" to install it. Same procedure for every program you might find with an online search.

If you installed Bodhi 7 alpha or beta, it'll turn into the release version thru normal update procedure, no need to reinstall or do anything special.
You can use apt from the command line, or synaptic gui, to search packages. But that's mainly useful when you're looking for something, not for browsing. For browsing, xpistian already mentioned the Bodhi appstore website. If you prefer a more complete gui appstore, you can install Ubuntu's gnome's software app: sudo apt install gnome-software --no-install-recommends
