Hello I am new to Boghi but not to LInux which I have been using for about 15 years. By the way I would say that I am delighted with the Bodhi distribution which runs my old laptop very well; but unfortunately I also need Windows as well as 'Usually I run in Virtualbox without any problem to be able to use my Garmin mountain bike computer with express and basecamp. The problem is that I installed VB by following the tutorial on Bodhi's Wikki to the letter but the installation the extension for the USB gets stuck in the end with error "666" and I really need the USB to be able to communicate with my device. This is the first time that this has happened to me after at least a good thirty of installations on other Linux distributions without any problem, do you have any idea how to solve this problem Thank you, I specify that I have to stop and restart the system at the right time and that the extension corresponds to the version of VB installed. Excuse me for my "Franglais" having a bit of trouble with the English I go through the translator. Thanks again for your help and well done for Bodhi.

Hi maskarin
For clarification, is the problem you're having configuring VBox for the windows VM to see your usb which has the Garmin software on it?

tl;dr: is this possibly and esudo/polkit problem?there are a couple of differently named extensions in the index for the version (5.2.42) of virtualbox i installed from the repos. the index: download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.2.42/. the two different versions: Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.2.42-137960.vbox-extpack Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.2.42.vbox-extpack i tried installing both directly with virtualbox without downloading first and then downloaded them both and tried. all four methods returned the same failure exit code 666: i noticed this in auth.log for each failed install attempt: after agreeing to the license an esudo window appears for me to enter my password instead of the polkit window i am used to seeing for programs like update manager and gparted so i was wondering if maybe that might be part of what is going on.

Hi maskarin For clarification, is the problem you're having configuring VBox for the windows VM to see your usb which has the Garmin software on it? Hello Thank you for your answer, to be clear, no for the moment Windows is not installed I just have a brand new Vbox to which I always want to add the extension to be able to communicate with my Garmin Explore and 310 XT. more precise for running Garmin Express and Garmin BaseCamp which are only provided for Windows and Apple and I have never found a Sir Linux equivalent unfortunately.

i personally don't know enough about the how of the permission requesting part of the install process to have an idea about how to adjust it.
i realize (i think anyways) most of us like to use programs that we are familiar with, but if no other solution is offered i had no problem getting usb access in my windows 10 vm using kvm/qemu and virt-manager.

maskarin , the version of Virtualbox you're using appears to be quite old (it was mentioned 5.2.x). Latest stable version of Virtual Box is 6.1.x. At the time of writing Bodhi Linux 5.1 repos are only offering version 5.2.x, there may be value in you adding the official VirtualBox repositories so you can install the latest version (and keep it updated using apt). You may simply be facing a VirtualBox issue that has been addressed in later releases of VirtualBox. I'll also review the wiki content to see if the installation instructions can be improved. The following instructions add the official VirtualBox repos (taken directly from VirtualBox website). I'll assume you're using Bodhi Linux 5.1 - 64 Bit (standard/HWE/App Pack): Step 1. Create a new repo source list file. Using an editor of your choice (here I'll use Vi Improved), with elevated (sudo) permissions sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list
Then add the following text and save the file. deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bionic contrib Step 2. Download and add the public keys for the new repo: wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - Step3.
Install VirtualBox 6.1 (latest version at the time of writing). sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install virtualbox-6.1 Step 4.Download the "all platforms" virtualbox extension pack from the official virtualbox website, look for the section titled: VirtualBox 6.x.x.Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack. At the time of writing this version 6.1.16, but as the filename and link change as versions are incremented the only reliable download link is direct from their website. wget https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.1.16/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.1.16.vbox-extpack Once downloaded, start VirtualBox then from the VirtualBox menu click File>Preferences>Extensions. In the right hand panel, on the far right there are some small icons. Click "Add Extension" and navigate to and select to the file you downloaded above. Click Open, you will then be presented with details (and a warning) about extensions, click Install to proceed. The License will be show, after you've scrolled to the bottom of the license, click " I agree" to start the installation. You will be promoted for sudoers password during the installation.
