I'm new to Bodhi Legacy, having to find a non-PAE 32 bit OS for an ancient Inspiron 8600. I've been using computers since the early '60s in high school, used Linux (ubuntu versions) since 2005, Unix before that. I an a retired astrophysicist, worked for NASA and DoD. Living in southern New Mexico, doing woodworking, enjoying the outdoors, and playing with old computers.

Hi Drphysic
Warm welcome to the forums. Glad Bodhi has breathed new life into your old inspiron. I love old laptops.

ya - welcome. i think i remeber the 58600. if that is what i had long ago it is old. i do know that sometimes you can be successful running a 64 bit on an old 32 bit. i did it so i know it works. i do not remember the specifics. seems like on an old macbook that was 32 bt i got 64 bit debian running on there if i recall correctly. may have even done the same with MX linux.
any work with skunkworks?
:-)))

someone on either debian or mx forums - one of the devs siad to give it a try. so i did. macs are finicky and some work live but don't boot installed and other scenarios. that is why i tried it. i know bodhi worked live but on install would only boot into debian. no bodhi. go figure. it was a year or so ago so i do not remeber the specifics. sorry.

Just stick with a 32-bit OS for a 32-bit machine. You cannot install 64-bit OS on 32-bit machine even with wizardry. In fact maintaining a 32-bit version is something that commonly brings new users to Bodhi, as many other distros are dropping or have dropped 32-bit support, at least moving forward.
