I'm looking to convert one of my old desktops into a server to run plex. I have it all working nice in BodHi using the snap version of plex... but I was thinking, that it is kinda a waste of ram and stuff to load a desktop and a display manager when the computer just sits in a cupboard most of the time.
I was thinking maybe I could make it into a headless version that just logs directly into the console login prompt and if I need I can open the cubboard and type startx to open a desktop. For eveything else I can SSH into it. I played briefly with unbuntu server but I just couldn't get it to recognize the wifi even though ubuntu and bodhi just recognize it off the bat.
So any ideas how I can make bodhi just boot into a console and not load a Display Manager or Windows Manager?

Have you tried systemctl disable graphical.target ?

seems drastic.. isn't there a way to just stop startx from loading on log in?

this method worked in a vm. i didn't test it extensively or have anything other than a just-created vm running so it may work differently with the everything you want to run in the background. i ran systemctl set-default multi-user.target from a regular bodhi graphical session and then rebooted into a console. sudo lightdm started the gui from the console, but some permissions were off (i needed sudo to reboot in a terminal). i rebooted into the console, ran systemctl set-default graphical.target and then rebooted into the gui.

yeah.... disabling the entire thing is not really what I was thinking. When installing gentoo or arch or void I end up with a simple login prompt to a console... then after installing xorg and all that you run xorg by running a app called startx.
What I am trying to work out is how to not load a display manager at all.. just drop directly into the console on boot, but be able to load the desktop ay any time by typing startx or some other command like that.
