Thanks everybody for the help, it WAS the HDD. When I pulled it out it was almost too hot to touch - must have been on the verge of letting go. According to the label on the drive it was made in 2011 - so doesn't owe me anything. Put a Toshiba 128G SSD in, up and running in just under 1 minute from switch on. Will shop around for a larger capacity SSD down the track.

Just changed the my old WD Scorpio hard drive on my laptop. Put in a spare SSD i had and the boot time is amazingly. I never timed the old spinning hard drive but it is obviously much faster.

systemd-analyze
And then use the below to see which items and their times to start.
systemd-analyze blame

systemd-analyze is command used in the terminal. It prints the numbers that these users are posting.

Startup finished in 3.967s (firmware) + 5.874s (loader) + 6.739s (kernel) + 25.488s (userspace) = 42.070s graphical.target reached after 25.451s in userspace
