Last week, I have reset a couple of laptop with Win7 and Win10, and of course I made the update. How painfull is it? I can not believe that a commercial OS has such a weak update system, above all compared with many Linux Distro ( Bodhi/Ubuntu for example ). It took more than 8 hours. On the Win10 Laptop ( Lenovo Ideapad 100s ), the last update disabled the drivers for keyboard and touchpad. I had to reinstall the Lenovo drivers with an external keyboard and mouse. That´s a shame. I´m not a developer, but why don`t Microsoft try to copy the Linux update system ( and why are they not ashamed about their actual situation ? ).

Very different beasts. Microsoft certainly has interest in Linux but I doubt they want to model their main OS after it (nor could they at this point). They are fairly committed to the path they have chosen, I suspect. Microsoft is a business aimed at making money; truth is there is not much money in legacy support. They really don't care if you (we/us) lose functionality due to having old equipment. Its a shame, but that is unfortunately a big part of it. Regardless, sorry you had a dismal experience - I bet it really makes you appreciate Bodhi Linux all the more.

Windows 10 updates have caused me to abandon it on 2 different machines.
2015: The first major update in November wrecked my access to Linux Mint. I couldn't figure out how to get the dual boot to work after that (I'm sure I could do it now). I had already been using Mint for 2 months and decided to go Linux full time after that. I erased Win 10 with a new Mint install.
2020: I purchased a Lenovo desktop from a refurbish company and it came with Win 10. I installed Linux Mint but decided to see if I could stand to use Win 10 so I dual booted. I would just update Win 10 periodically. Sure enough, some months later, the update process would hang. It claimed to have finished downloading, but the install would never finish. I observed a consistent upload of data that wasn't all that much. I just happened to notice it since I wasn't doing anything except trying to get the update to complete. As far as I was concerned, my drive was being read by Microsoft. I haven't booted Win 10 in well over a year. I wish I could get more people to leave Windows.

I don't mean that they should model the whole OS after Linux, but they could "steal" some features that are clearly better, above all the update system. I have some old machines running Win7 that I never updated, and I had no issues with them. And, as I already wrote in the forum, Win7 works a lot better than Ubuntu on those weak PCs. In theory, if you are a serious and professional company ( nothing against MS ) you should avoid that your update cause damages on any system. A similar situation that I hate is the lack of Android OS updates for many smartphones. I understand the purpose of the hw producers, but at the same time, I get sad when I do not get the new Android version on a smartphone that fullfill the hw requirements without problem. It would be cool to have a free android alternative for smartphones, but I am afraid that it will never happen.

"Win7 works a lot better than Ubuntu on those weak PCs" Could you elaborate on this? Win 7 is better than ie bodhi in these machines? Or you compare with vanilla ubuntu? From my experience nothing beats bodhi on older hardware... Moreover win 7 do not take updates any more, right? I would not trust my pc being online with an os without updates...

"..nothing beats bodhi" is 100% right, and that´s the reason why I'm writing here. I was referring to Vanilla Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Some months ago, I gave it a try ( even if my brother told me that I was loosing time ) on a Toshiba L300 Notebook ( Core2Duo, 4gb RAM, HDD ). It was incredibly slow. I installed Win7 64bit instead of Ubuntu, and it works a lot better ( dual boot with Bodhi, of course ). I agree also about your security remark, but that´s not my "production" laptop.

Yeah win7 certainly faster than modern gnome+ubuntu. And it hardly gets any updates anymore, so don't have to worry about that! Years ago when I dual booted win10+bodhi, I realized, all I ever did for a year when I booted win10 was spend hours on updates. So I got rid of windows, and the only thing I still have to use windows for (myharmony remote software) works in Win7 Virtual Machine.
In fact out of curiosity I just checked my update history, the only thing that seems to update is the malicious software removal tool....
