Hi! I was looking for a light distro for an old Toshiba R600 that I've got for free. It's a 2x1.4Ghz-3gb laptop. It was impossible to use it with Win7 and Win10, of course ( even if the Win7 hw requirements were ok ) because of high CPU load, high temperature and slow reaction. In the past, I have used Puppy and DSL on old PCs, and they did the job, but I was curious to try something else. Bodhi gave new life to this old laptop!
Ten days ago, I've got another old notebook for free: 2x1.8Ghz - 4gb ram. I've tested Ubuntu. Very bad experience! It's incredibly slow on that machine. Now, with Bodhi it works very well.
I think that a OS (in general) should be a container, and it's natural evolution should be to get lighter and smaller with every new version, but the big dogs of this industry are going in the opposite direction since Win 3.11. Personally, I find silly to be forced to buy new HW to use the last version of windows or Ubuntu.
On Bodhi, I am still trying to solve a couple of minor issues, but I will keep on using this OS.
The only thing that I really miss, are icons on the desktop. I've read a couple of tutorial about, but I think that in a modern OS you should be able to create shortcut to apps and files on the desktop without loosing time ( drag&drop or right click/send to desktop). IMHO.
A big thank to the developers! Please, keep on working on Bodhi.

Hi there neighbour (I am from Slovakia)
You made a great decision you checked our distribution. As you can see our OS is a tangible proof of our effort to keep code lightweight as much as possible. Feel free to ask all your troubles you have. We are very good community willing to help.
Icons on your desktop: Yes, you can drag and drop application from file manager to your desktop! Firstly you need to enable "Desktop Icons" module which is disabled by default (menu->settings->modules->files). In general, everything placed in your home/account/Desktop folder will be shown. It means pictures, desktop files, folders etc. If you wanna try Drag&Drop, open thunar file manager and go to /usr/share/applications. Look up your favorite app and drop it on the desktop.

Regarding new des being heavyweight. It is an issue i read often in programmers posts, the following beliefs: no need to write in c or optimise code in any language since nowadays hardware has plenty of cpu and ram available...

Regarding new des being heavyweight. It is an issue i read often in programmers posts, the following beliefs: no need to write in c or optimise code in any language since nowadays hardware has plenty of cpu and ram available... And that´s the reason why people and firms must buy new computers every three years, and sometime throw away the "old" one. Two months ago, I bought a laptop with I5 CPU, 8Gb ram and SSD for 40 euro. The seller told me, that the firm bought new laptops for every employee, and they do not want the old one back. I am against this politic since I had my first PC ( 80086 8Mhz ). I understand it if you play games seriously or if you use often apps for photo/video editing, 3d graphics or similar software that require high end Hw resources, but buying a 1000 euro laptop to browse the net and use some word and excel is not smart. Because of that, I try to support projects like Bodhi Linux and similar.

I replaced my two memory slots in my laptop. I had 2gb and 1 gb and bought 2 new memory sticks of 4gb each to max to the allowed memory and it cost me 40 euros. I will keep my laptop till it dies thanx to bodhi. Friends try to use ie ubuntu with latest hardware and i see two problems. In desktops new gpus and powerful cpus when one games draw a lot of current. And in Europe now the cost of electricity is high. 2nd problem when one has very new hardware is they have issues since the kernel does not support parts of it. So i am good with the idea that i have put a pause on buying every couple of years newer hardware. I do not think i will move to bodhi with base 22.04. I will stay with bodhi 20.04 till no more updates.

Stefan Ok, but it is not straightforward like on windows or other DE. It would be very useful, IMHO, to send an App directly from the menu ( right click or start menu ) to the desktop. I am not a developer, therefore I do not know how hard it would be to add such a feature.

I agree. It would be more convenient from the menu. I will think about it. Anyway BL 3.2.1 was fully without possibility to have any icons on the screen. Our former main developer was against this idea. I brought this feature back in BL 4, because too many people was asking about desktop icons. Anyway, I am not sure how deeply you studied Moksha desktop, but there are many other ways how to launch applications. That is the reason why I never used desktop icons for this purpose. I prefer iBar and Quick launcher (Everything) module which is more than just launcher. For you info I can show you my two videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvOTtpbwLHA&t=1s&ab_channel=BodhiLinuxwww.youtube.com/watch?v=9L21XD3Agb8&t=2s&ab_channel=BodhiLinuxStefan PS: "I bought a laptop with I5 CPU, 8Gb ram and SSD for 40 euro.". Oh, I would like to buy a laptop at same specs and price

My 2cents I like my desktop like it is. No desktop icons. As clean as possible. Like Stefan says there are better ways to launch apps. By the way elementaryos which claims is very user ux centric has not and does not allow desktop icons. I just posted something regarding the future of elementaryos in the other distros thread. Hope our team doesn't face such problems...

Hi oscarb75
I’m glad Bodhi has revived your machines. While other oses continue to get more bloated and make lower spec ones obsolete, we continue to keep our main value of small footprint, light resource requirements and a modern look and feel. It’s great to hear we’re reaching the users we aiming to support. Great to have you with us.

Hi oscarb75 Nice to hear Bodhi is doing well on your machines It is a lot of work to keep it lightweight and that is not made any easier by the fact needed libraries themself get heavier and heavier. Anyway glad to have you in our little community.
