On my old Linux Mint distro I was using Banshee to rip songs from CD. Banshee is not longer maintained however and decided to not install on Bodhi 6.
I wanted to give RipperX a try, but I didn't want to go through the make process with the tarball file.
I was able to install abcde from the terminal and it ripped the songs fine, but it was difficult to figure out how to get it to rip to mp3 with the bitrate I prefer. It was doing it as ogg and at a fairly low 112 kbps. It also was not intuitive how to get it to save to the directory of my choice.
So I finally figured out that Audacity was the best option, which is available in the Synaptic Package Manager. It can create a wav file to edit. This is good, since many songs contain 1-2 seconds of blank space I would rather get rid of.
Then it's rather easy to set the output file type and the bitrate I choose, as well as the directory to save in.
Edit: You can also adjust the output volume of the file. Even though software like VLC or Rhythmbox can also rip the CD tracks, they cannot do any editing of the files. Using Audacity saves time in this regard.
Winner: Audacity

Audacity is a great piece of maintained software indeed. Anyway I used ripperx and it worked very well. No need to play with tar. You can install from repository with no problems i.imgur.com/5hNRytG.jpgStefan

You can install from repository with no problems i.imgur.com/5hNRytG.jpgStefan I have tried some more from the repos. Asunder, RipperX and Sound Juicer. They all rip fine, but there are also lack of features. Options can be limited to where the files are saved. It's hard to save to another partition. I can't get ripperx to save mp3. It will save wav or ogg. Asunder and Sound Juicer will save as mp3 if selected. Asunder and ripperx won't retrieve song information, but Sound Juicer will. There's no way to change bitrate for Sound Juicer. The only feature lacking in Audacity is no ability to get song information. A small price to pay considering the file can be volume adjusted and end of song silence removed all with the same program. I need to use Audacity anyway to perform this after ripping with the other programs. I can look up the song information on wikipedia if needed. Audacity is also more comprehensive in saving the ID3 song information. I also discovered there are 117 different file types in the Custom FFmpeg Export option in Audacity. Holy cow. I'll never try all that
