Hi. I installed Bodhi Linux 6 Standard which is kernel 5.4.0-72.
How do I allow new Kernel 5.4 updates after installation?
Thanks!

Install linux-image-generic. You may also wish to install the header files: linux-headers-generic

I just use the Update Manager. When a new kernel or other software is made available, I click Install Updates and everything is handled automatically.

Hi kev392. In your case you have a AppPack version?
I have the Standard version and don't have the Update Manager.

Just for educational purposes this question, i do not want to change anything in my current setup. I also have the standard version. Why devs chose not to have 5.4 kernel updates? Are we less secure in terms of ie not having security patches? And we win in os stability? Thank you in advance for any clarification

You can add the update manager to Bodhi Standard by installing the "mintupdate" package.
sudo apt install -y mintupdate
When you run it the first time on bodhi 6, it'll have an updated 5.4 kernel listed there automatically (even without installing linux-image-generic).

Hi kev392. In your case you have a AppPack version? I have the Standard version and don't have the Update Manager. Yes, I have AppPack. It was only 1.6 GB. Anytime I see the word minimal, it means I have to do too much work adding Apps. Of course when I see something like 3.8 GB then that's definitely bloated.

Are we less secure in terms of ie not having security patches? And we win in os stability? Thank you in advance for any clarification The decision to not forcing kernel updates on users was Jeff Hoogland's decision made a long time at the beginning of this distro. Traditionally we have left this decision to the end User. Jeff's reasoning was that kernel updates can sometimes break things, usually as in lose hardware support. I have merely continued this tradition with the two releases I have made. Are you less secure if you do not update your kernel? In some cases clearly yes. The security of your system is your responsibility. I pay close attention to kernel updates myself. Even read the changelogs. I stick with Ubuntu kernels usually but I do update the kernel. Will I continue this tradition in future releases? I am unsure, I lean towards kernel updates. As in my mind security outweighs any potential chance of breakage. I have never had breakage from kernel updates in a very very long time on Ubuntu. But regardless what we decide in the future I am not going to change things for the Bodhi 6.x releases. For our next release BL 7.0 I will see what other team members think and make the decision then.

Ylee, Kev392, Enigma9o7.
Thank you for your help. It has no problem using a Kernel, which is working fine. Greetings!
