Following that link above, seems a workaround is to launch leafpad this way:
dbus-launch --exit-with-session leafpad

Nice. I am glad I found helpful link Anyway there is a permanent solution: sudo apt-get install appmenu-gtk2-module and restart. I know Hippy you installed the package yesterday but not sure if you also did restart. It was needed S

Many thanks, everyone, for all your efforts. As suggested, I updated my system, and this works: dbus-launch --exit-with-session leafpad It's a good idea to create an alias in .bashrc to automatically run Leafpad with this command.
However, as Hippytaff found, this did NOT work: sudo apt-get install appmenu-gtk2-module and restart.
