Thank you both, beardyboy and enigam###, for these further comments. Just to say, it'll take me a little time to look at/up some of these details. Sincerely Ian G

I went through the motions of a holding reply first thing this morning, but it now doesn't seem to be here. Basically, I said thank you for the further input, and indicated I might need some time to check out the various questions and confirmations. I've come back to report the first of those. The Linux kernel used in the version on the stick I bought is 4.1.5, which I'm guessing may confirm Enigma's thought that it may be too 'recent' for an old machine ?

Hi iang I see your reply from (currently) 5 hours ago, just above your most recent post. After a certain number of post it adds another page. Maybe that’s what happened? But it’s definitely there 🙂

No. But it implies its Bodhi Standard (64-bit) becaue Bodhi legacy (32-bit) came with 4.9. Bodhi Standard came with 4.15. (note 4.9 is older than 4.15; the dot in most software versions is not a decimal point, just a marker between major and minor (and possibly micro) versions; i.e. its four-dot-fifteen not four-point-one-five)
So it explains why it won't boot. Wrong ISO. Try with Legacy. You'll have much better luck

Morning, again. Other priorities largely took over yesterday, and I have checked in again now to make sure there was nothing new I had left unacknowledged.
Enigma's evaluation of the kernel version is a bit of a bombshell, because I ordered a 32-bit version, and indeed the accompanying paperwork says that's what it is. Clearly I need to go back to the seller again.
So now we know why the stick isn't working on the Vaio, in which case I need to find time and concentration to make a stick with the Legacy ISO. In which case, 'I may be gone some time'. Thank you to everyone who has tried to help me with this. Sincerely Ian Graham Wales UK

Hi iang It’s not as tricky as it seems to make your own live usb. Linux Using the dd command in the terminal. Take a look at these instructions and if you run into trouble feel free to ask. ostechnix.com/how-to-create-bootable-usb-drive-using-dd-command/Edit - one thing these instructions (and many others) seem to miss out is how to find the name of your usb. Simply do lsblk in the terminal with the stick plugged in and you should see sdbx where x will be a number. That should be the one. To double check if you have other usb devices plugged in is to remove the usb your putting the iso on and repeat the lsblk command. It’ll be the one that’s no longer listed. Hope this helps. windows To make the live usb then you’ll need to use rufus. Free to download. If using that method remember to check the dd option. There are a few posts on the forums about this if you need extra help just ask 🙂

Thank you, Hippytaff, and thanks again to everyone else who responded. I'm happy to report that I do now have the Sony Vaio 'in' Bodhi Legacy. As it is such a barebones installation, there's not much software yet to really judge how it runs, and I haven't been online, but judging by the clicking through the various menus that I've done, it seems to be pretty nimble.
Thank you, once again.
