The lower right corner is messed up when I try to use the File Transfer function from TeamViewer; a rectangular graphic with randomly changing contents overlays whatever is in that corner - here the battery status icon. It only disappears... when I exit TeamViewer, not by refreshing the desktop window (right-clicking an icon on the desktop and hitting Refresh View). Definitely an error somewhere, in the BL windows manager or TeamViewer.

I think I've had this kind of thing when I use transparent shelves or system tray or something without compositing module enabled. Give that a try - you can unload it if it causes problems, and note you can configure it if you dont like the things it makes transparent by default.
sudo apt install moksha-module-comptonmod
settings panel --> extensions --> modules --> look --> comptonmod --> load

This did remove the unwanted graphic... but added a new and bigger one elsewhere on the screen attached to the TeamViewer slideout element. Trying to start ComptonMod from the menu to see what's configurable... simply crashed it. So, no luck here. I removed it again.

Gotta edit the config file. There is a thread that explains it that I cannot find and I just spent 10 minutes looking. Something weird with this forum.

This is what I see now when this module is loaded:
The nonsensical black & grey rectangles attached to the TeamViewer slideout when this Compton thing was loaded.
I looked at the inside of the ComptonMod configuration file, but obviously I haven't a clue what to do with this.
Just tell me what I need to change in there to make this work.

Well, one thing to try, is just remove that file and let it use default settings. Thats what I do and prefer, it has less things automatically doing graphical effects, but allows other programs that support transparency (like terminology, conky, plank dock) to use it correctly. So it may help with teamviewer just having it loaded with default settings. Just hoping. Although you can certainly get it back other ways, the safest/easiest way would be to just rename that file something else. It will require sudo (you can open pcmanfm with sudo, or just mv file from command line).
Alternatively, in that thread I linked, I posted a series of commands to install and use a GUI editor to edit that config file, which gives you an idea of what some of the values are for. I know in your case you're trying to solve a problem not add effects, but somehow I feel like this is related...

Before I loaded this ComptonMod thing I renamed the 'compton.conf' to 'compton.conf.ori'. Then loaded the module, had a look at the folder again, and noticed that no default 'compton.conf' was created. Did a file transfer with TeamViewer, and as you can see it's as if this module isn't working at all now - the unwanted overlay graphic appears again in the lower right corner of the system tray... Given up on this. As I will be the one using TeamViewer on my nephew's laptop from a distance, this mess will disappear as soon as the TeamViewer session is closed, so he won't be bothered by it.
