I sometimes spin up an antix virtual machine. It’s great. Limited applications etc and for me it’s not daily driver material, but there’s definitely a place in Linux land for it.

void linux and antix made to me too a very good impression. I have seen almost all distros around. Bl seems the sweet spot for me. But antix for instance brings some innovation and perhaps inspiration for bl dev team

I recently gave Devuan a spin. The xfce version worked on my Gateway desktop. It's the only xfce recent release that does. Every other xfce causes screen tearing. Only distros to work out of the box (which are up-to-date-releases) are Devuan and Bodhi.
Also tried PC Linux, finally. Been around forever. I installed the LXQT version, then added the LXDE desktop. That works fine.
Currently running Bodhi and PCLOS. Also put them both on wife's laptop. Was able to get MS Office 2010 going for her with Play On Linux, but only on Bodhi. PCLOS is a bit unusual in that it's based on Mandrake, which was based on Red Hat. So it's harder to get certain things to work. Both are keepers, however.
Bodhi of course has systemd. I don't understand the controversy enough to care much about it. I understand even Linus doesn't have much of a problem with it. (How cool must it be to be one of those few individuals who you only have to say their first name, and everyone knows who you're taking about?).

I see nobody has mentioned EasyOS. It can run as persistent on USB and has the JWM-ROX desktop. It was created by Barry Kauler who started the original Puppy Linux project. Easy uses the Busybox 'init' system, no systemd. It's now 5 years old. easyos.org/

Not really capable of doing a comparison like kev did for browsers. After thorough testing (not benchmarks just what made me feel comfortable after a week or two as my daily driver) i chose bodhi. But i encourage anyone interested in seeing "competition" to for sure check out artix, void, slitaz, antix and tinycore. And devuan. A question to anyone who knows. Why i read from some people choose init freedom ie offered in artix and that systemd should be avoided if one wants a lightweight and fast experience? In my machines perhaps because they're not too old i am not sure i saw any difference...

ligoxi, in my experience systemd does not make a difference in performance. On my old 2009 Gateway desktop with poor graphics, nothing works better out of the box than Bodhi. So systemd does not affect its performance. I guess the problem people have with systemd is that it is growing beyond what an init program was originally supposed to be, taking over more and more things that had been handled by other programs. Possibly, those who are instinctively prone to conspiracy theories may see this as some kind of, well, conspiracy. But most won't care, unless it has some negative effects on their system, like poor performance, loss of privacy, etc.

It may be that without systemd a linux distro can be lighter than with it. One of the main reasons I really like Bodhi is that it doesn't do anything particularly nonstandard in the backend, it can run modern apps, etc. I think using systemd is one of those things that helps guarantee compatibility with modern stuff, and makes it so generic instructions usually apply to Bodhi, etc. For a super experienced user who understand how init system works, that may be a non issue. But for me, I only started using linux a few years ago, and started with Bodhi, and one reason I stuck with it is because it's relatively easily to search how to do anything, and most of what I read applies directly, because of the standard ubuntu base.

Forgot to mention Bunsen Labs. It also works OOTB for me. It is very light, but needs much work to make it usable. In the end I gave up on it for that reason. Took too much time to get things right. But I learned a lot.
