Hello again. I have installed Bodhi 5.1 on son's old netbook which is a rugged one that used to be used in schools and has a touchscreen and pen. It runs fine on Bodhi as you'd expect but the touchscreen and pen aren't working so I assume there are some drivers missing - or do I need to install a different version? I've installed the legacy version. It's basically an atom netbook that used to be on Windows 7.

Hey there - to help we'll need to know what hardware drives the touch screen/pen. Can you run these two commands through Terminology, and post the output by reply. lspci

It might be that you need to blacklist the usbtouchscreen driver for the kernel to use the correct driver for your device. To do this in terminology do
Do not restart, and check to see if there is a response. If so it might need calibrating and you will need to make it persistent as it will not survive a reboot. But check first and we can do the rest if it works.

Thanks. That didn’t do anything. Do I need to undo it now I’ve entered that?

According to the screen software manufacturer, the drivers for Linux are in Kernel 2.4. So presumably in later kernels as well.

According to the screen software manufacturer, the drivers for Linux are in Kernel 2.4. So presumably in later kernels as well. FYI - I've seen reports this hardware (22b9:0005 eTurboTouch Technology, Inc.) is seen to be working under Ubuntu 18.04, however I got the sense that was for x64 version of Ubuntu (it was an article attempting to get it to work under Linux Mint - where the reporter indicated it worked under Ubuntu 18.04). As a "next step" (after reboot), I'd suggest running the following commands (from terminology) and post the results. The 1st command will output a list of usb devices along with the driver being used. I'm hoping we can establish whether the correct driver is being used and if not take action (along the lines being suggested by hippytaff ) lsusb -t -vv This second command will output the kernel related messages where the keywords (in the command) are present (it will bring back more information than we need - but for speed this is good enough). sudo dmesg | grep -iE "input|usb|touch|error|warn"

Thanks! This mini laptop will only run Windows 7 or Bodhi - I haven't found any other distro that will run on it graphics wise. It's the cedartrail (?) processor that is limiting. The graphics driver only worked with Windows 7. It is only since Bodhi 5 that it actually displays correctly. It's a nice little machine that converts into a tablet and kid-proof. Other linux distros I've tried on it either wouldn't install or displayed with an unusably stretched screen - although haven't tried anything else recently as Bodhi works. I'm about to sell it. So if you do help me fix this I will make a donation! It isn't worth very much but someone can enjoy it.

Hmm...this is odd - as far as I can tell everything is loading correctly.
Before proceeding. Can I ask, are you at a relatively early stage regarding Bodhi setup? for example, if testing became destructive (ie ended up in a worse stat than just touch screen not working) other than wiping and reinstalling Bodhi would you have much more to do to get back to your current Bodhi install position?
the above just helps me understand how far we can go with testing.
EDIT 1
Lets make sure you're running the latest update to Bodhi - this is non destructive and a recommended post install action. Run the command below, once complete reboot and test touch screen if not working - and you're willing, try the suggestion in EDIT 2 (but it has caveats).
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
EDIT 2
Let me qualify this further. I'd like to see whether installing the Hardware Enablement (HWE) that installs a later kernel will provide better hardware detection. However, since you've had issues with other distributions working - taking such action could prove to be detrimental meaning that a Bodhi 5.1 Legacy reinstall will be required (far easier than trying to unpick / revert such as change).
If* you're prepared to reinstall Bodhi Legacy from scratch you could try the following command, if not then just post a reply saying so and we'll look further into why your hardware isn't working.
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04

Thanks. Yes I did all updates and upgrades after install and a few reboots since then. But will do it again just in case there's more :-) I have done a fair bit of of setting up - installing programs and setting up etc. But I can do it again if it comes to re-installing. So off to try that.
I suspect it is this machine - firmware or something. Everything I've read about it before said it would only run Windows 7.

Ok done that. All still seems to be working - perhaps some things marginally slower. Still no touchscreen. Rebooted and just the same. I have actually got the zip file for the Windows 7 touch screen drivers for this model but I don't suppose they'd be much good would they?!
Only thing I've noticed since running that is tap to click not working. But that's not an issue right now.

I think I'm going to give up and accept it's a hardware/firmware issue with this laptop which has always been quirky. Thank you very much for the help. I did try running Linux Mint live to see if the touchscreen worked and it didn't. I suspect it will be the same with anything installed. And most things won't install due to the quirky graphics situation.

I just installed Bodhi 5.1 on a Dell Inspiron 13 7000 series laptop with touchscreen. The touchscreen works just fine, but there is no onscreen keyboard coming up. What do I do to enable or install one?
