I updated Bodhi 5, having made some Timeshift snapshots first. the update was fine, system is up to date. but when I try to launch timeshift I get error message. Do I need to reinstall it?

i think that probably depends on the error message. if you share that, it might help figure out if you need to reinstall.

The message was simply that Bodhi was not able to launch Timeshift. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

that sounds like it is about needing sudo permission. you could launch it from the command line with sudo timeshift-gtk or make sure PolicyKit Authentication Agent is added to your startup applications in settings -> apps -> startup applications -> system tab. when you get to that screen and tab, you need to select PolicyKit Authentication Agent and click add down below. the button at the right of the screen should change from black to green when it is successfully added. you will need to reboot for that to take full effect.

in the unfortunate event that you ever end up with just a console or if you just want to use it, timeshift also works from the command line:

Yep that did it. Thanks! Thanks also for the tutorial. I'm saving it in case I ever do find myself in that situation.

you can run the command timeshift --help if you ever need to see that again
