I am soooo glad I found Bodhi. I had an old old old antique laptop that had windows 7 on it. It gave slow a new meaning. I thought I would just try bodhi and it is zipping along. I am shocked. This has totally changed my attitude..
Thank you to every developer out there that had a hand in this amazing OS..
Sincerely, Jenn (blossom)

Welcome to the forum! I've found Bodhi in the same way. After running it on 4-5 old laptop, I started to install it even on rigs that would be acceptable with other OS (Win or Linux), because of the outstanding performances and the enjoyable desktop. I also like that you do not get many apps out-of-the-box.

Welcome! When I found bodhi it was when I was trying to see if there was any use for an ancient machine, and I ended up liking it so much I put it on my newer machines too. Fast forward 5+ years and now those "newer" ones are pretty old themselves, but I've now also installed SSDs in them and they seem lightning fast to me, I still don't have much need for a new computer. Thanks Bodhi, and also thanks for cheap SSDs!

My old Dell laptop dates back to 2008. Came with a 2 core processor, 256gb HD, 2gb RAM and 32 bit Win XP. Seemed quite good in its day but after updating first to Win 7 and then to Win 10 it was difficult to say the least, from switching on to having a usable laptop took 10 to 15 minutes and if a scan was happening in the background it simply stopped.
Thought about increasing RAM but as much as I looked there was no compatible RAM available. Then bought a 500gb SSD (cloned the original HD onto it) and it was much improved, usable again.
But with Win 10 on its way out and the Laptop not being compatible with a Win 11 update had to look elsewhere to have a machine that was secure. Had one bit of luck when I discovered the Laptop was actually a 64 bit machine so tried Bodhi 6 and its brilliant, like a new laptop. Last week downloaded Bodhi 7 AppPack and just need to try it on a spare 120gb SSD before committing. With 2gb RAM should be fine but if its not will simply go back to Bodhi 6 for the next 2 years or so. Surely the laptop must die eventually.

Burned image to 16gb stick and tried Bodhi live. It was much slower to load than Bodhi 6 (which was also AppPack) and whilst it did not freeze or do anything daft it was very clunky unlike Bodhi 6 which worked flawlessly live.
So still need to try it installed on the spare SSD but before I do that I will burn a standard image to a memory stick and try that. There is probably loads on the AppPack that I will never need and it does not take that long to install the bits you actually do. Its just nice to have it all done for you.

Hi blossom:
It's amazing how a good distro can breath new life in old machines.
Especially a low-resource distro like Bodhi.

I see no reason why should be BL7 slower than BL6. Anyway there was an user reporting a slow BL7 in this thread but it speeded up surprisingly after a while. I can recommend BL 7 fresh installation with system upgrade. bodhilinux.boards.net/thread/1686/bodhi-slow-on-computer-solvedStefan

I think they're talking about how long it takes to boot live, not how fast it is after boot.
If I recall correctly I had the same issue, booting live took forever.... like 20 mins or something but maybe I'm remembering wrong... but really really long time.

Yes, booting the live image took considerably longer than booting after the installation on my not so very old hardware (T420 from 2011) - but not VERY long. But you never know... some combinations of hardware might cause strange issues.

I think they're talking about how long it takes to boot live, not how fast it is after boot. Both in my case. Booting live took an age and after it had booted it was slow and clunky. When I tried Bodhi 6 AppPack live it booted fast and worked flawlessly, so good that I had no hesitation and I installed immediately on an old 256gb HD which made the 2008 laptop as good as the wifes far newer Toshiba (Win 10 on a SSD). When I splashed out and got an SSD it was way better (ended up getting her a new Acer with Win11 to keep her quiet - so much for Linux being free). Bodhi 7 has not convinced me to install it yet. Will try it on a 128gb SSD I have spare but with many other things to do its on my to do list.

Maybe some file was corrupted and that caused the slowness.

I have since tried the Standard Image and whilst faster loading its still not as smooth as Bodhi 6. In fact it froze once on me but did recover without having to start again. Will try installing on the spare SSD before making final decision but on my 15 year old (coming up 16 years) Dell laptop it does not look good. Here is one for the experts, the Bios battery has recently died again (they last probably 5 years) which is probably not helped by the fact that I threw the battery out of the laptop in about 2011, it smelt of burning, not a good sign surely). Would that make any difference to live performance? the only difference for me is having to hit F1 at start up which is cheaper than a new battery.
