I just recently downloaded and installed Bodhi 7, and went on to update Thunar, downloaded all the dependencies source codes and compiled and installed, this completely broke the system to the point it wouldn't boot anymore.
I had to re-format and re-install the system.
I had installed Thunar 4.17 on Ubuntu 18.04 before so I figured it would be not problem.
Can someone direct me on the correct steps to update Thunar?

Hello and welcome
You did not describe how you upgraded Thunar. Package called thunar-bl is our compiled and modificated project did by Ylee. He added changing wallpaper item in thunar's context menu. Upgrading thunar from ppa or different repos can really damage the system in term of bad dependeced. Frankly, this happened to me as well. Maybe I am a bit more happy than you. I only can not use Thunar. The whole system is OK. I am still on BL6 here as I use it for my dev work. BL7 installation is planned soon. Anyway, is there something significant and worth upgrading in newer Thubar version?

I downloaded the tarball from github github.com/xfce-mirror/thunarversion 4.17.12. as well as xfce4-utils, xfce4-ui, exo and xfconf, all for the 4.17.12 version. built everything with make and installed with make install. Is there another way to update?

I have never compiled Thunar from source. Maybe Robert (Ylee) could assist more here.

The new version has split view which is nice, and a feature we lost when we switched to thunar from pcmanfm; at one point ylee put a newer version of thunar with that feature in bl6 test repos. Version 4.18.4 is in Debian 12 stable nowadays.

Sorry for late reply. Yes, the easiest way would be to backport from newer ubuntu (or debian) source package; that's easier than building from xfce's source (which I've also done before) and includes packaging, w hich makes it easy to remove if you want to switch back to the original bodhi's version, or if it turns out it ends up conflicting with something and you're forced to remove it. I just backported version 4.18.8 from Ubuntu 24.04-dev (Noble Numbat) to Bodhi 7 myself and you're welcome to try my build, it is attached here: bodhilinux.boards.net/post/11847
Then I had to build three packages for use as dependencies first - exo, libxfce4util, and libxfceui - before thunar itself. I did not apply any of bodhi's patches so it won't support the wallpaper feature, and I didn't sign the packages (which would be more effort for me, and you'd then need my key to install anyway; maybe I should learn how to use bodhi's key....).

The new version has split view which is nice, and a feature we lost when we switched to thunar from pcmanfm; Not my cup of tea, what someone will use or not, but... Thunar has been broken for at least a decade and is not worth using; even less worth compiling, and the split-view is worth nothing on its own, and even less in conjunction with such a broken file manager. Stick with PCManFM. At least it can keep the proper layout and uses less screen space.
If you have a need for a more sophisticated file manager, SpaceFM, with its four individually configurable panes AND tabs, is still the best.

What is "broken" with thunar, that has been fixed in a decade? Perhaps you're the only one that noticed it? Or perhaps its a very minor issue... Did you file a bug report?

I may add some 20 screenshots later for better illustration.
===========================================
Look closely at the enlarged images. Unhide and hide the hidden files, move a level up and go back, paste in (or create) a file and/or folder and delete them again, change the level, and go back; the Thunar layout is constantly changing. Things are never where one expects them to be. The grid problem can be seen even more clearly in the following screenshots. All these pictures are about Thunar's inability to keep the correct grid layout. The name length issue is very unpleasant, but of secondary importance, because in most cases file or folder names won't be very long, but the second icon in the third row has to stay in the second column after switching folders or showing and hiding hidden files. If it doesn't, selecting from a large number of icons or images becomes a very cumbersome experience. Thunar is the only file manager that can't keep its icons in the same column, which basically makes it the most broken file manager ever, and the only one unsuitable for the file management. If you only copy, paste, move, or open a few files occasionally, you may not even notice the problem, and it certainly won't bother you, but if you're trying to work, you'll need to replace it very quickly.

Sorry for such a late reply myself, but this worked like a charm first time, even Cover Thumbnailer works now! Thank you so much for this!
