I have an Acer Aspire Switch 11 (SW5-111, Intel Atom Z3745, 64GB emmc, 2GB of ram, touchscreen). Windows 8.1 is going away and I wanted to add Linux (want to keep 8.1 as I still use some Windows only programs that don't need internet or updates. I tried several puppies, which are my usual brand of Linux, but each caused a different problem with the tablet "pc". With Bodhi everything "works out of the box". The one thing I can't figure out is how do a frugal install like I do with puppy. Is it even possible with Bodhi?

AFAIK system files in Bodhi are sorted in the same manner as Ubuntu. I don’t know much about Puppy,s frugal install other then all system files are kept in one folder, and what benefit this really has but Bodhi doesn’t offer this feature.

I have no clue what puppy calls a frugal install, but bodhi is pretty minimal by design; nothing is included that most users don't need, but FHS is followed.

It’s not what I thought or what it sounds like. Nothing to do with minimalism really. Instead of spreading system files over /etc /bin /lib etc they’re all in one place. That’s how I understand it from having a quick look anyway.

This is from an old Puppy guide:
"Frugal installation is the recommended way of installing Puppy, and essentially means that Puppy is installed to a directory on a partition, rather than to an entire partition.
Advantages of frugal installations include easier back-ups, and the ability to have several frugal installations on one partition. Puppy can be installed to any partition that already contains other data, including partitions that already contain other operating systems. The other operating system will just see the Puppy installation as another directory. However, as the partition that you install Puppy on will always be mounted when you use Puppy, for security purposes you may want to install Puppy on a partition that has nothing important on it. Puppy is not a multi-user operating system, and the user has root access to all files on all mounted partitions at all times. Therefore it's a good idea to dedicate a partition to Puppy. I have a 3GiB partition on my laptop, which is more than enough space for one installation of most versions of Puppy."
The reason I like frugal installs, other than what's been stated above, is it allows me to do a long test-drive of prospective OS's. From what I see of Bodhi's preview each time you power down/sign off your set up is lost. It takes me a while to really dig into a system the way I want to and a frugal install gives me that time.
Thanks for all the replies.

A couple of possible alternatives to that could be to make a persistent live usb using ventoy, or use a virtual machine like virtualbox to install Bodhi. Instructions for ventoy persistent live usb can be found on our wiki. www.bodhilinux.com/w/ventoy/

OK, this is a case of not seeing the tree for the forest. I was over-thinking this. I went over to the Puppy forums and there was a lot of info on attempting to create frugal installs of puppied and non-puppied versions of other distros. But that wasn't my answer. The reason I bought this tablet PC was to be a single function 'puter. That function is to access my different financial accounts. That's where puppy comes in handy. When you log off there's a dialog box the asks if you want to save your session. Unless I'm changing/updating something the answer is No. I keep logons for accessing accounts and system work separate. That keeps my system pretty safe.
I was thinking; Bodhi's preview does the forgetting thing as a matter of course. You sign out/off and all your settings go bye bye. All I need to do is add bookmarks for my sites to the browser and export them to a USB. Importing/exporting isn't that big of a deal on most browsers* and it's good backup practice. I might see if I can drop 'n' drag a browser appimage into the preview mode (from a USB?) so I can have the browser of my choice. Anybody know if that's definitely NOT possible?
* Especially when compared to a hacked system and an empty account.

Ventoy is your solution for that also. Format a USB drive with Ventoy, copy the bodhi iso over to it, copy over your browser appimage (or mozilla version of firefox for example), then you can live boot bodhi and run the appimage. You could also keep your bookmarks there too.

Thanks, if I figure out how to add storage and persistence I can use this on my other PC's as well. Or better yet develop a method to swap USB's on a case by case basis; depending on what I'm doing on that machine. I'm sure between Ventoy's site and Youtube I can figure it out.

I already marked this as solved; but I just want to add something. Experimented with Librewolf's appimage and it works surprisingly well considering the spec.s on this tablet. Played a couple of Youtube vids because that site leans hard on this tablet's CPU. No glitches or dropped frames. Librewolf is a fork of Firefox that concentrates on privacy. It comes with UBlock Origin installed and it's de-Googled. Perfect for my needs.
