Is there a piece of software out there that shows the user all of the available icons on the system so the user can pick one to use. I need it for the app desktop file. thanks.

I can't think of anything good off the top of my head. You can just browse /usr/share/icons with ephoto or use Moksha's desktop editor icon selector thing but neither is ideal.
You can use 'find' to get a list of them. I often use terminology with find and grep for words I want, then click on them to display them.

Install yad. It comes with yad-icon-browser. Lets you browse thru all icon sets.

Neat! Seems odd it doesn't get it's own package, never would find it without knowing it's in there! Too bad can't make the list display them a little bigger tho, although I guess okay in the top.
Not sure exactly why it doesn't find everything tho, i.e. catfish.

Not sure exactly why it doesn't find everything tho, i.e. catfish. It is a simple GTK program, it would be really easy to modify. I haven't looked at catfish if as you say it not being found. My guess would be any icon not found is prob in a non-standard location. If that is not the case Doesn't look like that is the case so I would call it a bug and try to debug the code. And file a bug report. I knew about yads icon browser because I am a fan of yad. It is like zenity only a bit better
