OK, I shall pursue the xsane approach.
I have found a source for xsane at a site called Beyond Linux, trouble is that its a .tar build source.... ie 'beyond my
I shall keep looking for xsane to see if it's available in a good-to-go form

Why should you build xsane from source. It is in Ubuntu repos we have in Bodhi.
sudo apt install xsane

Found this location for an xsane download - as prompted I then looked at Synaptic Package Manager for a safer download. However I have not yet worked out how to use SPM to download from one of the sites. I shall start studying SPM

xsane will allow me to look at a preview of the scan doc, but will then crash when I hit the SCAN button !?
