No sound from HdmiLpeAudio/bytcht-es8316 soundcards [SOLVED]

My next steps: get the HWE version of Bodhi linux on the laptop. Unfortunately i need to first remove the 'standard one'. (using this)
In a Live USB session, sound and battery were also not recognized. Wifi was recognized after some commands.
I will also give the result of "aplay -l"

From the information posted above, I think it's safe to say you have two sound capabilities in your laptop/pc. ie: 

$> inxi -Fxz

Audio: Card-1 Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio driver: HdmiLpeAudio
Card-2 bytcht-es8316 driver: bytcht-es8316 
Again further proof HD Audio controller is not being detected and the sound capabilities are defaulting to HDMI/DP LPE:

Looking around the internet it seems there are a few cases of this audio controller hardware (ES8316) having issues with linux kernel. First off, can I ask that you check whether your kernel has a driver installed for the ES8316 device. Can you post the output the two commands listed below

ls -l /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/sound/soc/codecs/snd-soc-es8316*

Sorry for the delay. i needed to remove the standard Bodhi linux and that needed me to reinstall Windows to get that to boot at all. Now reinstalled Bodhi HWE. Wifi, sound and battery not yet recognized. I've provided the requested info above. Once I get wifi working, i will try out the 'update' steps.

sounds like you've had a tough time reinstalling bodhi / windows. ouch!

From the information posted, it suggests to me you already have the kernel driver for the ES8316 hardware - I was tempted to suggest compiling your own driver but that approach now seems redundant. I'm still intrigued about the two sound device situation and I'm also wondering whether sound works via a headphone socket too. 

Can you try:

1. Playing a simple .wav file (or similar) and seeing whether you hear sound through the headphone socket?
2. Also it might be worth just checking whether you have you have both sound devices listed in "AlsaMixer". to do this open a terminal and run this command: 
alsamixer
This above command will open AlsaMixer, maybe you can take a screenshot of that. and then another screenshot *after* pressing F6 (this will allow you to select sound card). I'd be interested in seeing whether you have both sound devices listed or just one. If you do see two sound cards listed, it might be worth switching between them and then trying to play a simple sound again (again checking whether you have sound through speaker and/or headphones). You can press ESC to exit out of the sub menu and again to quick AlsaMixer. There's plenty of info on AlsaMixer on the web, here's one example: Link 

3. Can you also check the BIOS settings for audio settings and post what you find. I'd be interested in whether you can disable either of the internal audio devices (the idea being to disable HDMI audio, or set the default to ES8316 device). then restart and again test for sound through speakers and headphones. 

4. if you still have no sound, then We'll need to find out what error the ES8316 sound device is generating when the kernel drivers are loaded, to see if there's a resolve out there.

okay pleased you';re making progress with battery etc. For sound: a few more suggestions: 

1. Can you run this command and post results. I'm trying to understand whether there are any issues when loading the snd-soc-es8316 kernel driver on start-up

2. I've seen it suggested that you *may* need some UCM files to tell alsa how to use the hardware. First check that this directory doesn't exist by running (if it don't exist it will display "no such file or directory"). If it does exist and lists files, can you post the output.

assuming the above doesn't list any files, lets (a) create the directory and (b) download some config files which tells alsa what codec to use and how to use them (c) verify the two files (HiFi & bytcht-es8316.conf) you downloaded in (b) exist in the folder .../bytcht-es8316

make sure you removed the ; at the beginning of the line, this is important! Save the file.  

3. Now reboot and test sound again (both speakers and headphones and for both audio devices in alsamixer). If you don't hear any sound can you run the command in step (1) again and post the output (again - I'd like to check for errors in loading the kernel module for the es8316 sound card). 

4. If we still have no sound, then go to BIOS disable HDMI Sound device, reboot and try sound again. It would also be interesting to see if Windows 10 plays sound with this audio device disabled. Obviously if no change then perhaps revert the change, but if sounds works in windows - then I'd be tempted to keep it disabled while we're troubleshooting this. 

I'll be honest, I'm running out of ideas - at this point.

Besides that, the microphone is also working and registers sound.
