My hearing is not really 100%, though I am not deaf. I would like to have the same live captions I have on windows chrome, but they neither seem to be there in chromium, nor can I install chrome on Linux.
I am using Bodhi 6.0.0
I tried to switch on life captions in chromium, but they just do not seem to be there.
I tried to download a chrome deb file and install that, as a saw in some older postings, but that does not seem to work.
I looked for another browser that might have similar functionality, but I only found an extension in FireFox, and it has some really bad reviews and you seem to have to have an Amazon subscription or something.
Any ideas?
BTW, I speak Dutch, German, Spanish and French too and sometimes watch stuff in those languages so if captions would be available somewhere in those other languages that would be great. But I think also with chrome, life caption is up until now only available in English.
My appreciation in advance, Marc Wentink

I would like to have the same life captions I have on windows chrome, but they neither seem to be there in chromium, nor can I install chrome on Linux. If you don't mind using google chrome, you should be able to use it from linux just fine. What went wrong when you tried download and install the deb file? Can you describe what you did, maybe used another browser to go to google website, download it, then clicked it on it from file manager and nothing happened? If so that's because bodhi standard doesn't include a GUI for installing packages.... bodhi apppack has gdebi, which you could install from synaptic if you want that to work next time. Or check the tutorial section to see a method to get thunar to do it as a custom action....
But for now, I suggest, paste the following command into a terminal (and press enter), and if any errors post the output back to this thread: cd /tmp;wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb && sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

That is exactly the command I found more or less what I did.
I am at work now and not on my Linux home computer but from the top of my head, the message was something like 'file type not supported'. If you have patience after work I can try again and give the exact error message.
I have installed the basic version, standard version, 832 MB. Maybe therefore I am missing a program that can handle deb files?
The only difference with your command and what I did is that I chopped it off into pieces.
mkdir tmp cd /tmp wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb ls sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

That message you get from non existing file. There was probably a typo somewhere. Give it a try again; show screenshot if it doesn't work.

Thank you for your help, I was now indeed able to install Chrome. I must have been tired yesterday and made a typo. But unfortunately I still have no captions. If you look at this video, at 1.00 in the Settings/Advanced menu you see a slider which can turn on the live captions. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICLzVQhNu0c @ 1.00 minute But on Linux with both chromium and chrome, I cannot find it: ibb.co/313QcDHAm I looking at the wrong spot or something, it just does not seem to be there. If I go into the Captions submenu, I can change the appearance of the captions, but there is no 'ON' switch anywhere and captions do not appear. Also on Windows if I switch that slide to ON, transcriptions files are subsequently downloaded. This does not happen either. Is this perhaps because the Chrome version on Linux is not up to date with the Chrome version on Windows?

After you click on captions, the first thing in settings under accessibility (as shown on the screenshot you posted), there is an on/off switch for live captions. After turning it on the first time, it downloads speech files, then it seems to work fine....

I am very sorry but either I am blind or that exact slide is missing in my browser. ibb.co/CtkqvPrAttachments:

Well I found out I could change the setting with 'chrome://flags/' and then searching for it. That is one step, but then the transcription files are still not downloaded.

I am still baffled why you don't have the slider switch there; does anyone else reading this not have it? Maybe we can find something in common with you? I tested on chrome and chromium, bodhi 5 and 6, 32 and 64 bit, etc, it's always there for me.

Did you install the same version of Chrome as I did? I checked the browser content, and I could not find any errors. I am on a very old laptop. It's more than 10 years old and it had Windows Vista on it. That could be an issue. Though Bodhi just is for these minimal installations.
I was actually very pleased with the live captions because I have a hearing disability. So it frustrates me. But I can use the Windows laptop, there it does work. Though it is my company laptop, I would hope they won't mind me watching some on line video there. Normally Youtube has captions. But many other sites do not. Apart from that, ordered a new computer so I do not have to use the company laptop to watch on line videos anyway.

I used latest versions of everything, and from my research this has been working for a year or so, its not a brand new feature.
I'd previously only testing on my primary laptop and several virtual machines, so I decided to check my other computers and that on/off switch won't appear on my athlon! So I can now replicate your problem.
Still dunno the reason, but I suspect there's some hardware requirement, and it disables it without that? But still guessing at this point, web search hasn't been successful either finding info on this, all I found is that on some chromebooks, if the switch doesn't appear, that means its not supported on that device.
Someone who understands complicated programs might be able to look at chromium source code and figure out what's going on there...

I'm using the latest Bodhi Chromium build (Version 102.0.5005.61).
Mine resembles the one marcwentink posted. I do not have the slide.

Maybe there is some check to see if your computers properties are up to date enough to support live transcription. I can imagine this device I have would be too slow for it. I have looked up the model, it is a: Acer Aspire 5720Z ICL50.
