I broke something but I don't know for sure how or how to fix it.
I think I broke it trying to install Warpinator . . . ? ? ? which didn't go well because of too many missing dependancies. I was going to work on that later but then realized that the synaptic package manager was broken. I tried to fix it with apt --fix -broken install but that did not work. Any help or hints would be appreciated - THX
EDIT: I also tried reinstalling the synaptic package manager and doing sudo apt update as well
EDIT: I can start synaptic from the terminal

Hi majpooper, I moved your post to the main support board as it’s not an issue with Elementary Applications. I haven’t looked into this issue much, but it looks like something to do with synaptic pk-exec. There is a post on the LQ forums, to do with policy-kit issues, but one of the devs might be able to verify if this is still an issue or not.

This issue should be fixed in BL 5.1. Is your system BL 5.1? BL = Bodhi Linux
EDIT: what happens when run warpinator from terminal?

Warpinator is Linux Mint tool and requires a newer version of gir1.2-xapp-1.0 ( >= 1.4.9) than Bodhi has. gir1.2-xapp-1.0 was a package I added from Linux Mint as it is needed by the mint update tool I also added. Now in theory it could be updated to the version Warpinator needs and not break anything, in reality, I would be uncertain about that without further research into that library (a part of the xapp library). And preferably trying it for a while in a VM. Unless you are a Linux Guru, the best way to install software Bodhi/Ubuntu does not provide is to ask for it and hope we can add it to the repos. In some cases, we are going to have to say no. It would make the system unstable, break things or just is more work (or more difficult) than we (it is mostly me that makes packages and adds them to our repo) wants to do.

From my post on the LQ forums: THX much - this fixed what I broke - Warpinator was more of a curiosity than a necessity. I am anything but a linux guru but did realize I tried to add an ubuntu 20.04 version package to ubuntu 18.04 version based BL - but it worked on LM 19.3 ( unbuntu 18.04 based) so I assumed it would work on BL 5.1. I can play with it in a VM as I am not sure what I did differently between installing Warpinator on LM vs BL or maybe it just breaks BL and not LM. Anyway donation on the way to say thx for all the great help so far. Reboot or log out and then in. In theory that should fix it.
